Is there some old-school programmer available around here?

Is there some old-school programmer available around here?

Just saw this ad today at my Institute's door. Rough translation:

Interim programmer sought

Requisites:

  • High school
  • One year of experience
  • Theorical and practical exams on the area
  • Familiarity handling electronic equipment, such as computers, perforators/punchers, terminals and similar.

[Yes, this is a joke post. I don't know how anybody is using such an obsolete job description. A job description at least three decades out of date]

[Well, yes, I understand it, because I knowhow that particular union works. But I cannot accept it is for real]

[...And no, please don't apply for the job. You will be miserable in the unlikely event you are chosen]

Where did I let myself be led to‽

I was invited to give a talk at "Universidad del Mayab", a subsidiary of Universidad Anáhuac. I saw several posters such as this one. It's hard not to freak out...

Finiding again the fearless men

"Pulque": Traditional fermented drink, original from the central Mexican highlands.
What a better place can you find for a "pulquería" than... Just below an Alcoholics Anonymous center?

To CURP or not to CURP

Submitted by gwolf on Tue, 09/04/2012 - 12:58
To CURP or not to CURP

CURP: Clave Única del Registro Poblacional, or Unique Population Registry Code. This is a (hopefully) unique, 18 character long, string identifying each Mexican - I won't get into the technicalities, but serve yourselves.

By following such a convoluted scheme, the authorities should have ensured a biunivocal relation between each person and their CURP number. Well, at some point, due to a bureaucratical mishap completely outside my hands (my patron registered me with the wrong birth date, as you can see in the page at the bottom), I got two CURPs - And the procedure to fix it was far from trivial.

Last Sunday, I entered the Consulta CURP system to print a copy of the official document. Much to my surprise... It answered that I was not registered!

A couple of minutes later, I tried again, and succeeded. But I could not refrain from printing my Certificate of non-registration.

I guess their system follows a strong-but-stupid scheme such as:

  1. begin {
  2. db = connect_to_database
  3. curp = find_curp_for_person(query)
  4. generate_document(curp)
  5. } rescue {
  6. generate_non_reg_certificate(query)
  7. }

So, right, if a user submits a query during the system maintenance window (after all, it was Sunday after 23:00), the system will fail to connect to the database (or whatever), raise an exception, trap it, and... Well, you no longer exist, thanks for playing!

Avoid it…

Translation: The consumption of alcoholic beverages inside the campus will be punished. Avoid it! Article 95 of the general UNAM statute.

So... What should be avoided? The message looks to me as calling for Article 95 to be reformed.

So, the market is just for trading ideas?

Triennial report

Triennial report

Ufff...

Every three years (since the second — Strange system) in UNAM we have to present a report stating everything (academically measurable) we have made during the past three years.

This years, it's been seven years I work at the Economics Research Institute of UNAM. And yes, I had to devote between one and two weeks of real productivity to gathering papers (even though I have most of it well organized!), organizing them, even writing nice words about myself, explaining why I deserve my salary level (or even more!)

In the end... this is the result. From bottom to top, my reports for 2003-2006, 2006-2009 and 2009-2012 (the book belongs to the 2009-2012 period).

Bureaucracy sucks. I'm sorry for all the trees we have to devote to this.

Peñafiel: Encoding fail

I'm sorry, this would not make any sense if I translate it to English. It might not be well understandable in locales other than es_MX. But anyway — It shows most clients have a clear use case for Tehuacán Peñafiel.
