Cycling by Reforma Norte: José de San Martín

Passing the San Martín statue, on Paseo de la Reforma.

As I was taught in Argentina, all of the San Martín statues are riding a horse and facing the Andes, as he went with his army by horse to this massive mountains to conquer (hmm... it's nicer if we just say "liberate") today's Chile and Perú.

And yes, our San Martín is facing the Andes: Facing South.

heyyyy, san martin fua a liberar a america del dominio español, no a conquistar mas kilometros cuadrados para la argentina!!! cuidadito con lo que decis del Santo de la Espada, el Padre de a Patria!!! y si, ese San Martin se ve igualito al de mi ciudad.....

Bueno, responderé pues. En una era antes de que las naciones actuales estuvieran verdaderamente constituídas, ¿cómo podemos aventurarnos a decir qué era "conquistar un territorio aún en manos de los españoles" y qué era "liberar a un pueblo hermano"? O incluso una decisión estratégica (igual que la de Bolivar): "A los españoles les preocupará más ver la insurrección cerca de Perú que acá tan lejos al sur. ¡Que se entretengan allá en lo que nos organizamos como país!"

Pero claro, nadie le quita su gran respeto a Nuestros Grandes Libertadores.
