Foldable «Universo» bike
Today I went to the La Merced area to finally buy a foldable bike. There were basically four options: Benotto’s 20” Utopia, Alubike 16” Foldingbike, Alubike 24” and a custom-made bike at a smaller store, Bici Universo. In Mexico it is also possible to buy a Brompton, although they are not available in larger stores and their pricing is prohibitive. Sergio Mendoza advised me to look for the Dahon bikes at Benotto, but they have discontinued them in favor of their own making.
I ended up buying the Bici Universo one. I must say this: I sincerely hope not to regret this option — I got this bike because neither of the other ones satisfied me, and this one was at about two thirds the price (MX$1800, plus some extras I requested, MX$2100 — That means, US$187 or €113).
First of all, after thinking about it for a while, I decided I didn’t want a larger, more normal wheel — The Alubike 24 (which I’d have to build shopping piece by piece, as they had only the frame for sale — Would be a good ocassion to learn more about the whole process!) is basically a great regular bike you can put in a regular car trunk, but is still too large for taking it into public transport or lugging along when travelling, by bus or by plane. Besides, the handlebar[fn]the original word I used, manubrium, seems strange, but that’s Google’s suggestion — The bar you take with your hands to steer the bike[/fn] is not foldable. So it is basically as portable as this venerable Compaq.
The Benotto’s manubrium does fold, but the bike does not hold itself together when folded, it is not stable. You have to explicitly keep it folded. Not exactly comfortable.
I had tested the smaller Alubike at another bike store closer to my home. It feels a bit freer than the Universo one (I’ll get to it soon), but still feels a bit kludgy… And at a price about MX$1000 higher, I decided against it.
Now, why am I wary with the Universo? Because after all… It is just a bike for kids age 4-7 and 7-12 (?) cut in half, and with a hinge soldered on:
It is also a heavy bike (I have not weighed it yet, but comparative guesstimates puts it over the Alubikes), so it might be problematic when travelling… I’ll see when in Nicaragua in a couple of weeks ;-) I have yet a couple of adjustments to make to it, but I am very looking forward to travelling with my bike on. I hope it turns out to be comfortable.
And in any case, I can —of course!— donate it to my nephews… who are in the right age group.

En realidad, tampoco puedo decirte que sea un experto en estos menesteres, sólo me compré la Universo :)
En realidad, que se doblen en microsegundos… no me importa o interesa tanto. Lo importante es cómo se siente manejarlas. Obviamente, la Universo es bastante cansada - Es un tanto pesada (15Kg; he visto de las más ligeras comenzando en 9Kg) y tiene sólo piezas estándar. Tuve ya un pequeño inconveniente con el engrane central: Está ligeramente desviado, con lo que saca muy fácil de su posición a la cadena… supongo que es por ser una estrella bastante sencilla. El lunes iré a un taller a cambiarla. Pero bueno, ahí está también la principal ventaja de que sea completamente estándar: Lo puedo cambiar con piezas baratas y en poco tiempo. Veremos cómo me va.

¿Y que hay de las Tikit de Bike Friday?
Hola Gunnar, felicidades por la adquisicion de tu bici Universo.
¿Oye y que piensas de las tikit? Valen la pena, me gusta la forma en que se doblan super rapido mas que una Brompton y aunque igual de caras :) quizás valgan mas la pena (aunque de hecho se nota que son un poco mas voluminosas) ¿sabes si las venden aquí en MX?

where can I get one of these in .mx? I’ve been wishing for one for about 2 years now but every time I’ve been in the US I’ve been cashless to get it from Amazon.
Also as more experienced bikers, do you guys think is worth it?

Como decía, no son de línea…
Sino que son bicis de niño adaptadas para ser plegables. Espero no arrepentirme con ésta, en buena medida por ser de acero -y por tanto, ser bastante pesadita- y en buena parte por ser, a fin de cuentas, una bici de niño - No sé si le tenga que cambiar la suspensión por una varilla rígida, porque probablemente no esté hecha para mi peso, o quitarle la salpicadera trasera (porque la llanta va rozando constantemente, agregando resistencia… Un recorrido de cosa de un kilómetro se me hizo un tanto cansado). Puede que venga bien reemplazar la manivela de los pedales por una más grande, porque sí me queda algo cortita. En fin, varios puntos que quiero revisar… Espero pronto llevármela de paseo (claro, antes de eso, llevarla a mi taller de confianza para que le echen un ojo y una mano), y ya les contaré a mi vuelta…

Dejé hace ratito mi bici en mi taller de cabecera (Bici Albatros, sobre av. Delfín Madrigal, col. Copilco el Alto, muy cerca de metro CU, poco antes de la entrada a la UNAM). Me dicen que la bici se ve bien, pero sí hay que hacerle algunos ajustitos… Veremos hacia medio día a ver cómo va.

You don’t take it apart, I guess… BTW, the hinge’s lock is probably the most fragile part in the assembly – I think I’ll somehow solder the nut to the screw end, as it sprang already once while unfolding the bike out of the subway.

Voy a cambiarle relativamente pronto el brazo, es lo mismo que me dijeron hace rato en mi taller… Me la voy a llevar por ahora a mi salida como está, pero llegará el momento de cambiarle el brazo… Y tal vez una estrella grandota de centro.
No me terminan de gustar los pedales plegables… Y el tipo de uso que espero darle (para cuando salgo del Defe, no para transportarla en transporte público) lo hace menos necesario. Prefiero mantenerlos aluminiados.

I have never seen (for real) any bike like the one you link to. I have seen several with a similar design — I can tell you, based on mine, that I don’t think they are very comfortable. Yes, this looks much more portable, but it has such small wheels it will surely be tiring even for moderate distances. And it will have very bad equilibrium/stability. Try a ride on a 16” bike such as mine and you will understand the difference.

Al ver la foto con Nadezhda…
Creo que el brazo del pedal es el original para niños, de ahi que la hayas sentido “burra” (por asi decirlo). Las bicis plegables por lo general son pequeñas pero el brazo se mantiene normal para que no sean pesadas al pedalear. Un cambio en la longitud del brazo del pedal no te vendría mal, y si te quieres ver “popof” tal vez unos pedales plegables (llegué a verlos hace ya algunos años)

Hola Gunnar. No conocía esas bici universo plegables, apenas hoy que me acabo de dar cuenta de su existencia. Tiene un gran parecido a la brompton aunque el plegado es distinto; aún así su tamaño plegado parece ser bastante adecuado. ¿Y que tal se siente en el manejo? Algo “nervioso” el manejo, no? Cuestión de costumbre. Y las llantas van a mas de 60psi? Ya vi que hasta suspensión tiene. Bien, te rifaste con la bici universo. =)
